A good question to ask yourself when youâre required to do something extra is, âIf I donât do it, who should?â There are many tasks that make a school operate smoothly that no one wants to do.
In my school, students who earn too many demerits are required to do an afternoon work crew. The school staff takes turns monitoring the group to make sure the jobs get done. Sometimes when Iâm showing a 16-year-old how to empty a garbage can without making a bigger mess than was there already, I think, âNine years of higher education to prepare me for this?â But when itâs my turn, I step in and do my part, because itâs the right thing to do. I donât keep track of the hours of extra duty I put in compared to the hours put in by the math teacher down the hall. I have faith that thereâs a system in place and that it will all work out. I also know that I can spend more time complaining than it would take to just do the job.
In direct contrast to the complainers are the martyrs. These people sigh and take on the tasks that have been assigned to people who do not show up, making sure everyone else feels their misery as they do the extra duties. Even though they work twice as long as anyone else, they can be just as annoying as the complainers. I will actually stop a martyr from picking up a job left by a slacker by telling her, âIf you do this now, Joe will expect you to do it every time. Why should he ever do something he doesnât want to do if he knows youâll step in and cover for him?â A common comment is that Joe wonât do it right if heâs forced to pitch in, but I try to point out that Joeâs incompetence is an administrative issue that will not come to the attention of the administrator until we stop enabling him.
I work for an administrator, Susie, who outworks everyone else on campus from the janitors to the headmaster. Whenever I feel like grumbling about monitoring another study hall, I think about the fact that Susie approaches every job with a positive attitude, does it to the best of her ability, and rarely complains or assesses blame. Sometimes she ends up doing a job that should have been done by someone else, but many of us work extra hours for her because she sets such a good example herself. She is free with her time and encouragement, and many of us are anxious to return that favor to her. She has many, many deposits in her goodwill bank, and when she needs help, she has credit to spare.
